Article: EPA approves Caterpillar's acert technology engine

Caterpillar Inc., which is selling heavy-duty engines that do not comply with federal emission standards, said the Environmental Protection Agency had approved an engine for use in mass transit, emergency vehicles and dump trucks.

The C9 engine is the first with the company's new low-emissions technology to get EPA certification, Caterpillar said in a statement. Full production of C9 engines with the Advanced Combustion Emission Reduction Technology, or Acert, will begin this quarter, the company said.

[Caterpillar spokesman Carl Volz told TRANSPORT TOPICS the C9 was primarily targeted to the mass transit market, but also has applications in vocational trucks and recreational vehicles.
