Contemporary art is a product and reflection of the living culture in which we exist. Ironically, however, it is one of the most difficult and misunderstood periods in art. Perplexed museum visitors consistently challenge our teaching staff at The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA), with their most often asked questions about art. Why is this art? What are we supposed to see when we look at this work? Is the artist trying to make a statement? How do we know this isn't a joke on the part of the artist? Did this artist study art? Why is this in a museum?
