Wanted: Highly skilled workers to fill gap

Testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee on behalf of the 3,000-member American Electronics Association, Stephen Leven, director of worldwide human resources for Texas Instruments, addressed the impact that the U.S. highly skilled worker shortage has on high-technology industry and the need to hire skilled foreign nationals to temporarily close the skills gap.

"The high-technology industry added some 290,000 new jobs to the U.S. economy in the 1990s," Leven said. "Unfortunately, the future growth of our industry is being threatened by a limited supply of skilled workers."
