Article: House approves FY 1999 defense authorization bill

On May 20, by a vote of 357 to 60, the House overwhelmingly approved the $270.4 billion fiscal 1999 defense authorization bill (HR 3616). The legislation includes $49.1 billion for weapons procurement, $36.2 billion for research and development, $94.5 billion for operations and maintenance, $8.2 billion for military construction and $11.9 billion for defenserelated activities by the Department of Energy. Essentially, the bill approved the amount President requested-the maximum expenditure permitted by the 1997 balanced-budget law.
