In the past few months, most members will have seen some of the tax reform discussion papers formulated by the Society's Taxation Centre of Excellence. Individual Tax Returns - Necessary or Not?, the first paper in the series, has, not surprisingly, elicited a vocal response in some quarters, while others have heralded it as common sense.
Despite the fact that the Society has quite clearly labelled this a discussion paper, it has been misread - or perhaps even misrepresented - as policy by some who have overlooked the value of the ideas and options it flags. Those who take the time to read the paper will clearly see the magnitude of these distortions. The Society has a diverse membership ...
