Article: Many support, one opposes 4 percent general sales tax

HELENA - Only one person spoke against a bill Monday that seeks to implement a 4 percent sales tax on nearly all consumer goods sold in Montana.

Numerous supporters of House Bill 749 told members of the House Taxation Committee that the sales tax would bring Montana's tax system in line with those in the rest of the country.

The bill's sponsor, Rep. Jim Peterson, R-Buffalo, said the proposed tax will deliver up to $52 million in new money to the state's general fund each year. Income tax and property tax relief as well as capital gains reductions would help ease the burden of the sales tax, Peterson added.
