Both the Senate and House have included a provision in the FY99 authorization bill maintaining Selected Reserve end-strength for the Coast Guard Reserve at a level of 8,000, consistent with the current level.
Concomitantly, Rep. Wayne Gilchrest (R-Md.) and Rep. Bob Clement (D-Tenn.), chairman and ranking member, respectively, of the Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation, House Transportation Committee, have written to the Coast Guard to express concern about the Coast Guard Reserve. The letter follows:
"In particular, we are very concerned that the Coast Guard's continuing inability to recruit to authorized and appropriated end-strength may, over the long term, endanger ...
