Franco Alfano is best remembered as the composer to whom fell the dubious honor of completing Turandot after Puccini's untimely death in 1924. For the crime of not being Puccini, Alfano paid dearly in reputation during his lifetime and beyond. Whatever its merits, Alfano's work on Turandot has overshadowed all of his own operas, including his two great successes, Risurrezione (1904) and La Leggenda di Sakuntala (1921, reconstructed after the score was destroyed in the war, and given a re-premiere as Sakuntala in 1952).
