A project called The Protein Atlas of the Human Genome promises to rapidly expand knowledge of the human proteome's relationship to the genome. The Atlas is the first product from Confirmant (www.confirmant.com), a joint venture between Marconi (www.marconi.com) and Oxford Glycosiences (www.ogs.com, see story on this page). Confirmant has a "protein-centric" view of the genome: It identifies protein-coding genes by determining the amino acid sequence of naturally expressed proteins and integrating that proteomic data with information from genomic and genetic databases, thus defining the regions of the genome that encode functional proteins.
