The psychological autopsy as a tool in student affairs

Recent data indicate that suicide has become the second or, according to some studies, the third, leading killer of young people (Dixon, Rumford, Heppner, & Lips, 1992; Lewinsohn, Rohde, & Seeley, 1996; Lipschitz, 1995; Ryerson & Kalafat, 1994). The Centers for Disease Control (O'Carroll, Potter, & Mercy, 1994) indicates that for the age group 14-24, suicide rates have risen from 4.5 per 100,000 in 1950 to 13.2 per 100,000 in 1990.

As disturbing as these statistics are, still more alarming is the finding that among students, at least 24% had thought seriously about attempting suicide within the previous twelve months (Centers for Disease Control, 1995). This finding ...
