Last year re-emphasized the volatility of the paper sector in Spain. In general, it was a better year for non-integrated producers than for integrated producers using virgin pulp. Spanish pulp production increased by 7.5%, while paper and board output rose by 5.3%. Most raw material supplies continue to be imported, with wood arriving from South America and recovered paper from Europe. Spain imported 716,400 tons of recovered paper from Europe last year, up 3.5%.
For several years, the only significant production capacity increases have been small machine upgrades and a project at Saica. But new machine projects have emerged, such as a new startup at Papelera Peninsular in May 1998. The PM ...
