Article: Downtown Charleston Project to House Law Firm, Bank

A major investment is on its way to downtown Charleston, but a long-closed century-old hotel at Summers and Virginia streets first will have to be razed.

The Kanawha Hotel is scheduled for demolition next month. Developers hope a 68,000-square-foot office building will stand in its place by 2004.

"The future of Charleston greatly depends on the private sector's willingness to invest in the downtown area," said developer Brooks McCabe, a member of the investor group that owns the hotel.
