Article: EPA, Xcel near deal on French Island pollution

Xcel Energy could pay a $500,000 penalty to settle a federal air pollution case involving the French Island power station, the Tribune has learned.

Xcel and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency declined to comment Friday on a report that the two have tentatively agreed to settle the case, brought in 2001. According to an email from within EPA, the agreement is "awaiting final signatures." "It is premature at this time to discuss the details of the consent agreement because it is not yet final," said Brian Elwood, an Xcel spokesman. "Xcel Energy will provide comments on it once it is lodged with the court and open for public comment."
