General Motors Corp. is hoping the Indianapolis 500 will serve as a launch pad for its new SSR two-seater, which was the pace car for this year's race and will hit showrooms next month.
But poor Chevrolet engine performance on the track has many wondering what kind of marketing bounce the race will be for any vehicle branded with a Chevy logo.
"There's always been this [idea] that you race on Sunday, and you sell on Monday," said Steve Finlay, editor of Ward's Dealer Business Magazine. "That theory has worked for Chevrolet in the past, but this year, they have a conflict in a serious way."
