Domestic violence has been recognised as both a public health issue (World Health Organisation, 1997) and a healthcare priority (World Medical Association, 1996). Within the UK, the link between domestic violence and health has been acknowledged in terms of cost implications for the National Health Service and for the individual (Department of Health, 1997). Yet clinical experience of mental health practice would suggest that it is an issue seldom acknowledged - or simply overlooked
