Background

In March 2000 the Mid Sussex Breastfeeding Initiative Group was awarded a L15,000 grant to set up a breastfeeding project that would benefit local mothers living in a deprived area.

Prior to this application for funding, the Breastfeeding Initiative Group had achieved much already including setting professional standards; multi-agency training, annual audit and symposia to celebrate National Breastfeeding Awareness Week. Within this climate was a desire to move forward with other projects. Targeting specific groups to provide facilities to encourage the uptake and duration of breastfeeding was key.
