Monticello is one of our greatest national treasures, and it is hard to imagine that Americans ever lacked the desire or the resources to preserve and maintain Thomas Jefferson's plantation home in the manner to which tourists have become accustomed. Yet as Melvin Urofsky demonstrates in this thoroughly engaging book, Monticello almost certainly would be only a memory today had it not been for the efforts of one family.
