Article: Calcium supplements hailed for reducing PMS symptoms

Calcium supplements may be just what the doctor orders the next time a patient complains of symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS).

A recent study, "Calcium carbonate and the premenstrual syndrome: Effects on premenstrual and menstrual symptoms," conducted by St. Lukes-Roosevelt Hospital, New York City, found that, overall, PMS symptoms were reduced by 54% in women supplemented daily with 1,200 mg of calcium. The study, which was published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, involved 497 women and was sponsored in part by SmithKline Beecham Consumer Healthcare, which makes the calciumbased antacid Turns.
