Article: Newer treatments offer physicians many options

SAN DIEGO - Advances in the treatment of acne are giving physicians more therapeutic options for difficult cases, according to Gary M. White, M.D., chief, department of dermatology, Kaiser Permanente. But in addition to the newer, less-irritating topical retinoids, physicians should consider relying on some tried-and-true therapies, such as benzoyl peroxide, to overcome Propionibacterium acnes resistance, he noted.

Dr. White explained that it is best to start slowly when initiating treatment. For example, mild disease requires topical therapy; moderate inflammatory acne treatment usually means the addition of an oral antibiotic, such as tetracycline (Achromycin, Cyclinex, Cyclopar, et al). ...
