Epilepsy is the second most common neurological disorder, stroke being the first. There are many seizure types due to different causes and syndromes with varying prognostic outcomes. It is difficult to give precise prevalence figures as there is a great variation in inclusion criteria, but it is usually quoted as five to ten cases per 100,000 persons. MRI has come to play a vital role in the clinical management of epilepsy as it has allowed the visualisation of abnormalities which are thought to be consistent with the genesis of patients' seizures.
