Introduction
For many years the health care team has been faced with the challenge of combating hospital-acquired infections. In 1884, Florence Nightingale recognised the importance of hygiene, stating that `hospitals should do the sick no harm: However, in spite of increasing efforts, hospital-acquired infections are still widespread and are costly in financial as well as human terms.1
