Technology review: A primer on course management systems

Introduction

Many companies today provide software packages, known as a course management system (CMS), to help facilitate the online learning process. Most of the packages provide a helpful and user-friendly course development tool with which faculty can move traditional, campus-based course material to the Internet. It is difficult, however, to know which software package or course management system is the best one to choose for a particular environment. Currently more than 38 different course management systems compete in the marketplace, although the number is somewhat inflated because many of the companies have multiple product listings (i.e. Embanet hosting ANGEL, Blackboard, ...
