IT ISN'T OFTEN that a large collection of paper dolls, some dating to the late 17th century, comes to auction. When the dolls and paper dolls collected by Maurine Popp appeared at the April 12th Skinner auction, prices ran the gamut from $206 for several fullsized Sunday funny paper doll sheets, including a rare uncut Dick Tracy, to a whopping $22,325 for a c. 17th century lady with mica overlays. The set consisted of a full-length painted figure of a lady with 21 painted mica overlays of various costumes, along with two male escorts. Considering the fragility of paper, it is amazing that so many examples still exist.
