Article: Tank carriers seek TSA meeting on hazmat background checks

NEW ORLEANS - The National Tank Truck Carriers said it had alerted the Transportation Security Administration about industry concerns that states would not be ready by November for the new requirement that hazardous materials drivers undergo FBI background checks.

The trucking group also said it asked TSA to convene a meeting of state agencies, truckers and government representatives on how the checks are to be performed.

NTTC President Clifford J. Harvison, in a May 13 letter to TSA Administrator James M. Loy requesting the meeting, wrote that "at the present time, it is apparent that state motor vehicle licensing agencies and offices (particularly those at the district and/or local level) ...
