With children's diets under intense scrutiny, Helen Crawley asks whether government guidelines for school meals are really working
ABSTRACT
There is growing concern over the diets and nutritional intake of children. School meals are vital in shaping children's food choices and promoting healthy eating. Qualitative government guidelines, introduced in 2001, stipulate that school meals must include certain food types in a weekly menu. However, a recent survey reveals that the guidelines are not encouraging children to eat healthily. It is time for the government to adopt and monitor a more rigorous system of quantitative nutrition-based standards.
