OPINION
Only in L.A. would a story about something purely superficial make front page news. But last month The Los Angeles Times reported, as if it carried great weight: city council votes to change the name of South Central to South Los Angeles. The hope, of course, is that such a move will help eradicate the ghetto stigma that South Central has borne the last dozen years or so, after economic decline, gangsta rap and civil unrest conspired to make it synonymous with urban nightmare. City leaders figure they're fighting fire with fire in approving a change that might help reverse the bad psychological effects brought about by a name. If we all stop saying South Central, perhaps it will ...
