Let us not forget the weekend of Sept. 26 and 27, 1998. It began on a triumphant note. Not long after midnight, the New Orleans Zephyrs, playing in Las Vegas, were on the way to winning the first-ever minor league world series. But even in victory there was concern as an ESPN2 announcer explained: "You know some of the Zephyr players are worried about getting back to New Orleans because of that hurricane kicking up in the gulf."
A "zephyr" is a form of wind, a light breeze of the sort found in the Rockies, a name appropriate to Denver from which the franchise came and one that is somewhat relevant to New Orleans because of a former roller coaster by that name. On the weekend that the ...
