Gregg T. Lueder, MD, and David Garibaldi, CO, compared visual acuities when measured with Allen figures and Snellen letter optotypes using the Mentor B-VAT II Monitor. The authors observed that the Allen figures on the Mentor B-VAT II Monitor are of less uniform construction and appear larger than the Snellen letters.

This suggests that visual acuity measurements using Allen figures may tend to overestimate the visual acuity compared with Snellen letters.
