Article: Low interest rates cause jump in mortgage refinancing

Lower interest rates have dramatically increased mortgage refinancing and lending in Mississippi. The low rates are also encouraging more new business startups and expansions.

"The continued lowering of interest rates has served to shore up the housing industry," said Dr. Colleen Cameron, professor emeritus of economics and international business at the University of Southern Mississippi. "Probably, without the lowering of interest rates, we would have seen a continued softening in the housing market. The lower interest rates seem to have slowed the weakening of the housing sector."

Cameron said the lower rates have also eased the financial burden to industries that are trying to expand.
