Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center will help serve as a model to improve organ donations throughout the country, based in part on its high organ donation rates.
When U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson launched the organ donation collaborative in April to increase access to transplantable organs, he asked his staff to evaluate hospital organ donation programs and organ recovery programs throughout the country.
Gundersen Lutheran stood near the top among hospitals in the nation, said Chris Thomsen, Gundersen Lutheran organ tissue donation liaison. Gundersen Lutheran was one of 16 hospitals in the United States chosen to be evaluated for its success.
