Abstract. The consolidation of Peronism as the hegemonic political force within the working class in Argentina introduced key changes in the nature and possibilities of the labour movement. While the final outcome was the loss of labour's autonomy, Peronism granted it the power it required in order to become an effective political actor. From her position as intermediary between Juan Peron and the working class, Eva Peron played a key role in this process. This paper seeks to address both the nature of Eva's intervention in this process and the characteristics of her leadership that account for the immense popularity she gained among workers.
