This study falls into two more or less unrelated parts: (1) in the first chapter Franzmann makes a strong plea for the use of the Nag Hammadi writings in the search for the historical Jesus and reviews the contributions that have been made along such lines; (2) in all but one of the succeeding chapters E takes up themes that cluster around the figure of Jesus in the Nag Hammadi writings. Understandably, an effort is made to focus on the character of Jesus "especially as that character is active within the earthly context" (p. xiii).
