Article: Gemfibrozil reduces cardiac events in CHD patients with low HDL cholesterol but no other lipid risks

Gemfibrozil is a cost-effective treatment for reducing cardiac events in men with coronary heart disease (CHD) whose only lipid abnormality is a low level of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, reported Hanna Rubins, MD.

She presented results from the Veterans Administration HDL Intervention Trial (VA HIT), conducted in 2,531 men (mean age: 64) with CHD and the following lipid profile:

HDL cholesterol levels of 40 mg/dl or less,

low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels of 140 mg/dl or less, and

triglyceride levels of 300 mg/dl or less.
