A friend of mine, who is not rich, made a New Year's wish that "Americans would stop hating the rich."
There are good reasons to take this wish to heart. Included in the Ten Commandments with the prohibition against murder is the prohibition against envy. That God would mention the two sins in the same breath should tell us something.
Moreover, there are good practical reasons to curtail our envy, because, in the end, measures taken against the rich, such as the income tax, end up applied to the rest of us.
In our time, hatred of "the rich" is a political phenomenon, much like hatred of the Jews in National Socialist Germany and hatred of the bourgeoisie in Communist Russia were ...
