We explore the process and outcomes of a collaborative enquiry with our daughters as we sought to determine the extent of our influence on their educational decisions and the subsequent impact of their experiences on us. Our own and our daughters' recollections of their schooling reveal the extent to which controlling mechanisms in the system had directed our behaviours, as well as our daughters', and led to straggles between conformity and resistance.
