Article: East St. Louis experiencing turnaround

The 30,000 residents of East St. Louis are witnessing an explosion of construction in their city, and area developers think it's long overdue.

"There is no question that East St. Louis is under retailed and under served," states Jim Koman, president of Koman Properties, Inc. "Ninety-five percent of their retail needs are filled elsewhere Belleville, Collinsville, Cahokia."

Koman Properties is developing a 50,000-square-foot retail center, the first major retail project in East St. Louis since the 1950s. The center will house a Walgreens, Hollywood Video, grocery store and other smaller retailers. The project, located at 25th and State, will open its first phase in April. Koman states that ...
