Set specific objectives and then ensure that the pilot plant can adequately address them.
Because a pilot plant often is seen as an intermediate step between the laboratory and production, too many pilot plants end up looking like either a scaled-up version of the laboratory or microplant process, or a scaled-down version of the proposed production facility. Yet, a well-designed pilot plant need not look like either. It should, instead, be designed to focus on those critical areas in the process where problems may be anticipated, especially where answers cannot easily be obtained by either laboratory experiments or computer simulation.
