ABSTRACT
Hypertension (HTN) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) occur together in many middle-aged and elderly men, up to 44% by one estimate. The alpha antagonists doxazosin and terazosin are the only pharmaceutical treatments approved to treat both hypertension and BPH. The other agents approved for BPH-finasteride, a 5-alpha inhibitor, and tamsulosin, another alpha antagonist-require a second agent to manage hypertension. Both doxazosin and terazosin are effective when used as oncedaily monotherapy, which is likely to improve medication adherence and lower acquisition costs in these patients.
