MULTICULTURAL EDUCATION has significantly influenced schooling in the United States for at least the last two or three decades (Banks, 1992). Its proponents have argued, compellingly, that education that excludes the experience and contributions of women and diverse cultural groups is miseducative of those excluded groups as well as the privileged groups represented in such schooling (AAUW, 1992; Sleeter, 1991).
American education has generally responded to such criticisms by attempting, with varying degrees of success, to be more inclusive in its enrollments, curricula, methods, and aims. But multicultural education has also become one of the most controversial issues in education ...
