Easter is a much more important feast than Christmas in the liturgical year. It bears witness not just to the greatest miracle of all time but to the birth of Christianity itself, which is the celebration of the Crucifixion and Resurrection. Yet it never generates the same excitement as Christmas. At school it merely marked the abrupt end of our Holy Week sufferings. We were not allowed to go home until lunchtime on Holy Saturday, after an agonising week spent mostly on our knees. It began on Palm Sunday with a two-hour High Mass and an elaborate sermon drawing attention to the significance of the ceremonies we were to endure in the days ahead.
