Luca Ronconi's staging (La Scala, 2000) of Puccini's pot-boiler, with its severely angled sets and raked floors, fares better onscreen than it did in the house, due to the added variety of close-ups alternating with dizzying views of the caving-in walls of the Church of Sant'Andrea della Valle, Palazzo Farnese and the top of the Castel Sant'Angelo, where even the cell features folded-out walls, from which it would be easy to escape.
