New Orleans -- Dermatologists around the country are focusing on the unusually high occurrence of skin cancer in transplant patients and the need to educate patients and their doctors about the risk, Clark Otley, M.D., said.

"Many transplant patients develop severe skin cancers," said Dr. Otley, senior associate consultant, department of dermatology, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn. "People's lives have been ruined or they have died from skin cancer following transplant surgeries.

It's a terrible problem, it's a fascinating problem, and we're taking proactive steps to try to solve it."
