BUZZWORDS COME AND GO - particularly in our industry - but here are two words that I believe represent a major, long-term movement in real estate: sustainable design.
The World Commission on Environment and Development defines sustainable design as "meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability [of] future generations to meet theirs." Encompassing many different aspects of design and functionality, sustainable design is the creation of structures with the foresight of environmental impact, neighborhood preservation, and systems that run better and run smarter.
As William McDonough put it in The Hanover Principles: Design for Sustainability, "Designing for sustainability ...
