INTRODUCTION
Nitric oxide (NO) is known as a defensive molecule against parasites, tumor cells, intracellular microorganisms, and viruses. This defensive function of NO is mediated by cytotoxic metabolites of NO such as peroxynitrite and nitrosonium.1 The nitrous metabolites with biological activities can inhibit iron sulfate-containing enzymes such as hemoglobin, inhibit electron transfer in mitochondria, and suppress cellular replication by activating ribonucleotide reductase.2 Nitric oxide can also function as an immunomodulator.
