Consumers who want to quit smoking will have a third OTC nicotine patch to choose from late this spring. Elan Corp., based in Dublin, Ireland, with U.S. headquarters in Gainesville, Ga., has received Food & Drug Administration approval for a supplemental New Drug Application to change its nicotine transdermal system patch from prescription to over-thecounter status. The other two OTC nicotine patches currently on the market are SmithKline Beecham's NicoDerm CQ and McNeil Consumer Products' Nicotrol.
As an Rx product, Elan's smoking-cessation aid for adults was marketed as ProStep by WyethAyerst Laboratories. The OTC product will now be marketed and distributed by Perrigo Co., Allegan, ...
