Syntroleum, Marathon and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) aim to learn many key operational and future commercialization lessons from a new $52 million gas-to-liquids (GTL) demonstration plant at Port of Catoosa, Okla., near Tulsa.
The 70 barrels/day plant, formally dedicated this month, will allow its operators to learn everything from plant start-up to optimization to scale-up issues, helping push forward GTL commercialization around the world.
For Marathon, it's a chance to get real-world operating experience on a complete GTL plant. Such experience will come in handy for future GTL commercial ventures, such as Marathon's proposed 120,000 b/d GTL plant being discussed with Qatar. ...
