Article: Gay pride celebration nabs 'straight' sponsors

For 15 years, Indianapolis' gay and lesbian community hosted a one-day Pride celebration. Traditionally, the sponsors were the bars, restaurants and other businesses closely associated with that community.

But this year, Indy '96 will feature 12 events during seven days. And nine of the 25 corporate sponsors that donated more than $500 are considered "straight" businesses.

None of which surprises Bill McKinley, co-chairman of Indy '96. In fact, he said, if the sponsorship packages hadn't gone out so late this year, there would have been an even bigger response from straight businesses.
