Article: Newspapers square off in battle for Putnam County readers

WINFIELD -- Putnam County is the fastest growing area of West Virginia.

The county is situated between the state's two largest cities, Huntington and Charleston. An easy 30-minute drive to either, and blessed with an abundance of a rare commodity in the state -- flat land -- the county has seen rapid expansion of business, industry and residential developments.

In just 18 years, Putnam County has seen its population swell by an incredible 27.9 percent -- from 38,181 in 1980 to 49818 today. During that same period, the unemployment rate in the county has shrunk from 10.5 percent to 5.6 percent, and median family income -- at $31,448 has risen to almost $5,000 more than the state average.
