Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive disease of the brain leading to intellectual failure and memory impairment in the elderly. The hallmark of AD is the beta-amyloid peptide,1-12. Beta-amyloid plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of AD (1,7). Its internal fragment, beta-amyloid25-35,^ (AP)), is highly toxic to cell lines such as PC12 cells. PC12 cells are a tumor cell line originating from the adrenal pheochromocytoma (2), which has become a commonly used model system for studies of neuronal development and function.
