Paris - Self-reported sensitive skin is common and not necessarily accompanied by physical signs. Recent studies reveal sensitive skin can have a wide variety of symptoms, not all of which are apparent on traditional tests.
The studies were conducted by investigators at the Centre de Recherches et D'Investigations Epidermiques et Sensorielles (CERIES) in Paris. They found self-defined sensitive skin affects more than half of all women.
In one study, 319 women aged 20 to 50 years were interviewed. Ninety percent reported they had sensitive skin, with roughly one-third reporting "somewhat sensitive," "sensitive," and "very sensitive" skin. The interviews revealed a variety of symptoms:
